How It Works

  • Intro

    Legitmix frees you from the burden of sample licensing by allowing your fans to recreate your remix, mash-up or DJ set using their own copy of the copyrighted source track(s) you sampled. You can now legitimately promote and sell your work, acknowledge and generate new revenue for the artists you sample and give your fans a convenient and safe place to discover and buy your work.

    Sample

    The first step in the Legitmix process is the most important: make a great remix, mash-up, sample-based beat or DJ set and save it as a high quality MP3, AAC or FLAC file. Then using Legitmix, you identify where consumers can purchase the source tracks you sampled. You can identify source tracks in the Legitmix store or provide links to a supported retailer. After identifying the sources, you can select an audio preview for your work and optionally provide cover art.

    Promote

    You’re now ready to tweet a link to your Legitmix page using your own lgt.mx URL and embed the Legitmix widget on Facebook and blogs. The cover art and audio previews on your Legitmix page and widget gives you an engaging new way to promote both your work and that of the artists you sampled. Legitmix also offers an affiliate program to help drive traffic to your catalog and provides tools to run remix competitions.

    Sell

    Legitmix lets you legitimately give away or sell your work by creating a Legitmix file for your remix, mash-up or DJ set. A Legitmix file is like an instruction set fans can use to seamlessly recreate your work using their copy of the source tracks. Legitmix can search a fan's computer for source tracks so they only need to purchase the ones they are missing. The recreated remix is identical to your original version and can be automatically imported into a fan's iTunes library. In a few clicks fans can buy your work and the original tracks you sampled.
